Spring is here and the Sackville Community Garden is ready to celebrate! Our annual Good Grounds Café (in conjunction with the Rotary wine and beer tasting event) is happening this Friday from 7:00-9:30 pm at the Tantramar Veterans Memorial Civic Centre, 182 Main Street. The fundraiser is the most important of the season and helps us with our start-up costs each year. We will be offering delicious desserts (baked by local buisnesses and Sackville community members), coffee and tea for donations. Spread the word!
Also, we are currently signing indivdiuals up for plots this year! Plots are priced at $30/ 5 x 15 ft plot. In that price you also get access to a greenhouse on site, a toolshed, some seeds, workshops and planting guides! If you or someone you know are interested in signing up for a plot this year please contact us at sackvillecommunitygarden@gmail.com.
In other exciting news: the community garden has receieved funding from the Mount Allison Student Administrative Council's Green Investment Fund (GIF). This is a great source of funding for organizations that are working to help lower carbon emissions. For our funded project we are going to build new raised beds at the garden - important for land that is suspectible to flooding. This will allow for a larger area of viable gardening space, thereby increasing the number of community members that can get involved at the garden, as well as the amount of organic crops grown and carbon sequested within the soil. We'd like to thank the Mount Allison Student Administrative Council for giving us this amazing opportunity! We are very excited (:
Stay tuned for other exciting events coming up this season... as well as the official date of our upcoming Introducton to Organic Gardening Workshop (likely occurring mid-May). Even if you don't plan on gardening with us this season you are still more than welcome to attend to receive an introduction/refresher on organic gardening!
